How to play rummy step-by-step
Learning how to play rummy is pretty simple, and online variations allow you to get accustomed to the rules at your own pace. Most rummy games follow five basic steps as follows:
At the start of the game, players are dealt their cards. Any remaining cards are then placed on the table and referred to as the stack. The dealer takes the top card in the stack and reveals it on the table to start the discard pile.
After the set-up, the player to the left of the dealer goes first. They have the option to draw a card from either the stack or the discard pile. If you draw from the stack, you must take the top card. If you draw from the discard pile, you can take any card of your choice and all other cards on top of it in the pile. As a rule, you must use any card you choose from the discard pile immediately.
Once a player has drawn their cards, they then need to try to form valid melds with their hand. Melds can feature either three or four cards of the same rank (a set) or three or more sequential cards of the same suit (a run).
If you’re able to form a meld, you must display it next to your hand. You can add to your existing melds throughout the game, and some rummy variants also let you layoff, whereby you contribute cards to other players' melds.
This is the last step for a player and is not optional. You must take one card from your hand and place it in the discard pile. After that, the next player clockwise takes their turn, and the game continues in this manner until there’s a winner.
There are two ways you can win in rummy. A player automatically wins if they’re the first to get rid of all their cards, either from melding or discarding their last card.
The game can also end if the stack has been used up and a player does not want to pick a card from the discard pile. When this happens, the remaining cards in each hand become deadwood. Each player gets points for all their melded cards and loses points for their deadwood cards. Depending on the rules, either the player with the most points or the first player to reach a specified score across multiple rounds wins.
What is a card sequence in rummy?
Card sequences in rummy are referred to as melds. There are two types of melds: sets, comprised of three or four cards of the same rank, and runs, which feature three or more sequential cards of the same suit. Here is an example of both:
Set: King of hearts, king of diamonds, and king of spades.
Run: Four, five, six, and seven of clubs.
Forming melds is the basic game strategy, which is why players aim to gather cards of the same rank and suit. Runs are generally considered to be more useful than sets, as in points-based rummy games, an ace is often worth just one point if it’s included in a set, but 10 if featured in a run.

Points rummy
In points rummy, a player can choose to end the round when they get two melds, including at least one pure meld (one that doesn’t include a joker). In most versions, the winner is the first player to get 80 points.
Deals rummy
Deals rummy features a bonus rule whereby if a player forms a meld before the next player has taken their first turn, any points they lose in that round are halved.
Pool rummy
Pool rummy combines rules from 13 card rummy and Indian rummy. Players pay a fixed entry fee, which forms the prize pool on offer in every game.
Gin rummy
Gin rummy is a two-player variant usually played up to 80 points. In this version, a player with 10 or fewer deadwood points in their hand can knock on their turn to immediately end the round.
Rummy 500
